History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1854
End Year: N/A
History: Ai the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, the country formed part of the old Northumberland territory, under Sir M White Ridley's Mastership. In 1845 the Hunt was dissolved, and Mr Maughan, then Master of the Slaley, hunted what is now the Tynedale territory. The country as now constituted dates from some time before 1854.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, which lies in Northumberland, extends some 29 miles east to west and miles north to south. The west half of the country still contains plenty of grass with large enclosures. Stone walls and timber provide most of the jumping. The eastern part has a certain amount of plough with substantial hunt jumps. Hedges are few but a bold fast horse is required to keep with hounds. Visitors are welcome. Best centres: Stamfordham from which meets of the Morpeth can be reached.
