History of the Hunt

History:	The pack was formed in 1873 after the amalgamation of two smaller packs, the Patterdale and the Matterdale. Mr Hasell appointed as his Huntsman Joe Bowman (probably the most famous fell huntsman after John Peel), who had already hunted the Ullswater pack, first on 14th November 1879, when he was 22. He finally retired in 1924 (having left for a period between 1911 and 1915), having completed 41 seasons. He died in 1940 aged 90. Joe Wear became whipper-in when Joe Bowman retired; he was appointed huntsman in 1933, and was with the hunt for more than 40 years in total. Dennis Barrow was huntsman for 25 years, retiring in 1996. There has been a long association with the Lowther family, a number of whom have been Masters, including Lady Jane Benson who retired in 2009.
