History of the Hunt

History:	The Hunt is an amalgamation of the Weardale Hunt and the Tees Valley Beagles, completed in June 1988. The Weardale was founded in 1950, and renewed a tradition of hunting in the valleys of the Wear and Derwent by the Wear Valley Beagles, which had been in existence from about 1860, until the outbreak of World War II. The Tees Valley was originally raised by the Durham Light Infantry, when the Regiment was stationed at Barnard Castle; when they left in 1957, hounds were purchased by a Committee, and the Hunt was re-named The Tees Valley Beagles, adapting the name of a pack that had hunted the same country from 1850-1939.

The country comprises the whole of Co Durham, although hunting is chiefly confined to the Wear and Tees Valleys, west of the A167, plus the South Tyne Valley in Cumbria and Bewcastle country, north west of Gilsland. Best centres: Wolsingham, Staindrop and Alston.
