History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1820
End Year: N/A
History: The country has been hunted since about 1820 when Sir Rose Price was Master. From 1864 until 1939 it was controlled by the Bolitho family. At the outbreak of war the hounds were put down except for a few brood bitches. In 1943 a Committee was reformed, with M L Oats as Master. In 1950, when Capt B W B Sparrow became Master, the hounds were being bred on lines parallel to the neighbouring Four Burrow Hunt, and thanks to the generosity of various hunts, a pack of hounds was established on pre-war lines and excellent sport was had. H T Lutey, whipper-in for eight seasons, became a joint Master with Capt Sparrow and hunted hounds most successfully. In 1974 J T Bunch, kennel huntsman and whipper-in, hunted hounds for two seasons. In 1976 Lady S D Bolitho was joined by J N Thomas who hunted hounds for the next ten seasons. F C Berryman, carrying the horn, and Mrs M C D Ansell became joint Master for three seasons from 1986 with the goodwill of the country sustained by them. From 1989-95 a professional huntsman was employed by the Committee.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country occupies the extreme west of Cornwall. Along the northern spine of the country is rough moorland; to the south are small enclosures consiting of stoned up banks which do not need to be wired, hence the need for an athletic horse. (Cornishman V, of Olympic fame, was originally hunted with the Western.) The numerous, small, irregular fields and heavy outcrops of gorse need an accurate hound able to turn sharply, and a huntsman skill is tested to show good sport in this difficult, and often underestimated country.
