History of the Hunt

History:	The Hunt dates from 1869, when the 4th Earl of Radnor took over the country, which consists chiefly of loans by the South & West Wilts, New Forest and the Portman. On Lord Radnors resignation, in 1883, the country was hunted for one season by the New Forest and South & West Wilts. On Lord Somertons acceptance of Mastership (1884) the Hunt became known as the Cranborne, and so continued until 1887, when the Earl of Pembroke took the Mastership. In 1897, on Mr Cazenoves acceptance of office, the name of the Hunt was altered to Wilton.

The country lies in Wilts, Hants and Dorset; it extends about 30 miles north to south by 16 miles east to west. Best centres: Salisbury, whence meets of the RA (Salisbury Plain); Fordingbridge for the New Forest; and Cranborne, whence meets of the Portman are accessible.
