History of the Hunt

Start Year: 1874
End Year: 2019
History: The Woodland Pytchley was originally part of the Pytchley country, and until about 1874 was hunted by the same pack. The Pytchley Hunt owned the Brigstock Kennels, had a limited control over the Hunt, and retained the right to grant privilege of wearing the White Collar until 1947, when they handed over the kennels, relinquished all their rights and gave up the country to the Woodland Pytchley Hunt. Since 1874 a separate pack has been kept at Brigstock; this pack until 1881 belonged to the Pytchley Hunt. Lord Lonsdale bought the then Blankney pack and established it at Brigstock during his Mastership. In 1885, when he took office, Austin Mackenzie brought his own hounds with him from the OBH (West) country. In 1899 he sold his hounds for 5000 guineas, for 3000 W M Wroughton purchased the bitch pack with which Lord Southampton began to hunt the country in 1899-1900. Mr Wroughtons hounds were sold in June 1908. For some time the country was hunted by Black and Tans but Capt Bellville re-established an orthodox pack which Mr Emanuel purchased and presented to the country. The Hunt is much indebted to the Misses Wilson for seeing hounds through the war years, and subsequently to Major M F Berry for his lengthy period of Mastership and later as Chairman.

Hunt Country

Hunt Country: The country, which lies in Northants, extends some 20 miles in greatest length north to south and about 18 in greatest breadth east to west. It is a flying country, and requires the best stamp of hunter. A great part of the old pasture was ploughed up in the War, and the country is now a mixture of pasture, a number of large woodlands and a proportion of set-aside. Many inviting fences have been built. Best centres: Kettering, on the Pytchley borders; Market Harborough, commanding meets of the Fernie and Pytchley; Oundle and Thrapston on the Fitzwilliam border. Adjoining Hunts: the Cottesmore and the Fernie to the north; the Pytchley to the west; the Pytchley and Oakley to the south; and the Fitzwilliam to the east.
