Collecting hunt buttons goes back a long way, and the tradition of hunt staff collecting a large and a small example from other packs that they visited, or with which they held a joint meet, has expanded into a world-wide hobby, both within the hunting community and in the wider society of generalist button collectors. It is, at the same time, a simple task and a complicated minefield of questions.
Baily’s Hunting Directory has started this section to provide an opportunity for its subscribers to request information, ask questions, seek identifications of ‘unknown’ buttons and to share new and interesting finds of obscure and unusual buttons. Also, to run the occasional editorial theme for fun and education. Please remember that it is not for advertising buttons for sale or to swap, or commercial enterprise in any way.
We realise that, whilst some collectors have years of experience, there is no single ‘guru’ on the subject, and we are happy to take opinions and educated thoughts, but we ask everyone to try to avoid blind guesses. Who knows? We may end up with categories such as Definitely, Considered to be, and Your Guess is as Good as Mine! For its part Baily’s Hunting Directory aims to use the best information available from current and historical sources before offering an opinion. Being the best known name of all hunt directories, we are privileged to be afforded access to private collections and reference material around the world in addition to our own one hundred and twelve years of illustrations, and we take this opportunity to thank those collectors that will help us without reservation.
