About Baily’s

Why are you no longer printing the Baily’s Hunting Directory?

We did not move away from the traditional format of red hardback editions lightly, conscious that Baily’s Hunting Directory had been published in that format since 1897. However, we faced the situation that it was no longer financially feasible to publish Baily’s Hunting Directory in printed format. By placing the Directory on a Web site, we can make much more information available to far more people at a fraction of the cost. We very much hope that you enjoy this Web site and find it useful. If you would be interested in purchasing a shorter printed version of the current Baily’s Hunting Directory in the future, please register your interest by providing your full contact details in an email to info@bailyshuntingdirectory.com.

Is the content of Baily’s Hunting Directory the same as in previous printed editions?

Actually, it is so much better! With this online version, we can give you more than ever before. We include the same content on all registered hunts but we are now able to expand the range of aligned services and update details as soon as we get them without waiting for the next annual edition.top

Genealogy and Bibliographic Research

We receive numerous requests, often at very short notice as deadlines approach to assist with either genealogical or bibliographical research. Where and when time and other work permits we may willing to help with your project but please be reasonable, particularly if you have no intention of subscribing. It may take us 28 days or so to get back to you.
If you want the information urgently we make look at providing it as a chargeable service. Please send us an email to info@bailyshuntingdirectory.com in the first instance.top

How do I update my hunt details?

Updating your hunt details on Bailys Hunting Directory
If you are the Hunt Secretary or Master and are therefore able to authorise changes you will need a PIN to make changes. Each PIN is unique to your hunt.

Step 1 – Go to the bailyshuntingdirectory.com website and select “Edit your hunt” from the top right-hand corner menu:

Step 2 – Select your hunt from the list and type your unique PIN into the box provided:

Step 3 – Enter details into the fields provided for Contact Details, Hunt Details, Location, History, Privacy Settings, and Other Details. Where needed, scroll down to move onto other fields.  Once all details are updated, click the “Update Hunt Listing” button

Hunt Quarry – if your pack follows more than one type of quarry, you can select multiple options from the list by holding down the CTRL button. If you follow a type of quarry yet to be listed please select “Other” and add the extra one into any appropriate notes or comments field and notify us to add it to the list.
By default, we strongly suggest all English quarry packs should ensure they are marked as ‘following draglines or trails’ in addition to any permitted quarry exemption.

Privacy Settings – these are used to control what people are able to see on the site as described in the table here: Please ask us before changing these!

Public View Subscriber View
Standard Anyone landing on the site but not logged in can see the details stored in the Contact Details section but nothing else Anyone logged in as a valid subscriber will be able to see all details held
Hunt name only People landing on the site but not logged in can only see the hunt name n/a
Without addresses n/a People logged in as a valid subscriber can see the majority of details but any address information in specific address fields will be hidden from them

Step 4 – Update existing people/role combinations by selecting the relevant entry from the People Record list and then clicking the “Edit” button next to it:

There will be 1 entry for each combination of person and role – so if 1 person has 2 defined roles (eg Master and Secretary) they will have 2 entries.  These are further marked Current and Previous to help identify the correct combinations. This will open the Person Record popup with the stored details for that person in the role specified:

Update the details as necessary and click the “Update Person” button. Then click the “Update Hunt Listing” button. If the list of roles does not include the one you want to list, select “Other” and use the Role Notes field to capture the role title. When finished (either individual person or all relevant existing ones in the list) click the “Update Hunt Listing” button to transfer the information into the database

Step 5 – Add new people/role combinations by selecting the “Add New Person” option at the bottom of the hunt listing edit page:

This will open a blank copy of the Person Record form. Enter the details as appropriate and click the “Add Person” button, then click “Update Hunt Listing” to add the information

Note – it is vitally important to click “Update Hunt Listing” after every new Person/Role combination you add to the list to make sure these are all saved correctly. The Person Record will not show in the selection list until this has been done

When you have made all the changes needed, you can navigate away from the page. We recommend that you go back into the Directory to check that the listing has been updated as expected. Getting back into the edit form will need you to go back to Step One.

Troubleshooting

If you have any problems that are not in the list below, or the normal response does not provide the answer, please contact us using any of the contact details on the website with as much information as possible so that we can help you. If possible, screen shots of what is happening as you work through the update would be really helpful

Problem Response
I don’t have a PIN for my hunt Your Hunt Secretary was given a PIN when the website was first set up, or when the hunt was listed, whichever happened first

If you are a new Hunt Secretary check with your predecessor for the PIN or anyone else who may have it (eg a Senior Master or Chairman has this in some cases)

If the PIN has been forgotten or lost, please contact Baily’s Hunting Directory for help or a reminder. We may ask to check with other hunt officers known to us to make sure you are the right person for us to release this to

Send the details to be updated or added to Baily’s Hunting Directory and we can make the update for you. This may take some time at busy points of the year
