We at Baily’s have had the opportunity to try the wonderful atmosphere at Crowcombe Court (www.thehuntbox.co.uk) and were most delighted at the real country-house feel, warm welcome and amazing food that we found there.
Of course, this is not a traditional hotel, and you will need a party of friends to really enjoy the house party experience, but if they have heard of Crowcombe then they will know the reputation of owners David and Kate Kenyon and their amazing ability to make the Court feel like your ‘home from home’. Staying here is an experience not to be missed.
We were particularly keen to try Crowcombe Court as it is in some of the finest hunting country in England. Nearby hunts include the West Somerset, the Chipstable, the Taunton Vale Foxhounds, the Minehead Harriers, the Dulverton Farmers, the Quantock Staghounds, the Devon and Somerset Staghounds and, if you feel especially guilty after a Crowcombe breakfast, the West Somerset Beagles. In fact, it is possible to ride out six days a week within a very short distance of the Court, and if you are interested in doing so local stabling or the provision of hirelings can be arranged. The presence of a large boot room and drying facilities makes this the perfect location for a hunting holiday. The experience is enhanced by David and Kate both being keen on country sports themselves, and well able to talk hunting or shooting with anyone.
In terms of accommodation, Crowcombe has eight amazing spacious and sumptuous en-suite rooms available all with king size beds and replete with antique furniture and fittings, making it a perfect size for a true country house party. As well as the warm welcome already mentioned, amazing dinners with great conversation and wonderful breakfasts before you go off to the field left us absolutely astounded at how relaxing and enjoyable the whole experience was.
Talking practicalities, visitors are normally accommodated over two nights with an arrival supper the evening before the Meet and then a formal dinner on the second night. This may be Black or White tie to suit the party. Breakfasts each morning are very full, very English and from direct experience set you up for the day! Dinner menus are agreed in advance and prepared by the superb chef with three courses plus local cheeses. (Example below)
Smoked Pigeon Breast
Beetroot & Horseradish Jam & Dressed Lambs Lettuce
Root Vegetable Dauphinoise & Glazed Green Bean Parcels
Homemade Lavender Shortbread
Pre-dinner drinks and wine throughout the meal are included at no additional charge.
In keeping with the House Party feeling, David and Kate hosts also provide a complimentary decanter of malt whisky in the main Drawing room.
For those with an interest in history or architecture, we can heartily recommend David’s guided tour of the building if you can persuade him to take time out from being a perfect host. There are some wonderful hidden surprises that a casual visitor might just miss.
If a weekend or two staying at Crowcombe Court so that you can really enjoy the sporting in the area is not on your bucket list, then your list needs revising and this exceptional venue needs to be added.
